This the ¾" roughing gouge is probably the most popular, being capable of both small spindle and work up to about 1½". The Roughing Gouge is the first tool to use when spindle turning. It is used to conveniently take of the corners of the stock leaving it round ready for further work. They will also make initial shaping cuts removing the bulk of waste wood very quickly and efficiently. The cutting profile of these tools are ground straight across making sharpening them easy to perform with a bevel of about 45°. (Not for bowl turning)
