Lime wood also called basswood in America is a great choice for wood carving. It has a very fine light grain, and it is soft to carve when compared to other hardwoods. It works exceptionally well with hand tools and will hold an edge for fine detailed work. Grinling Gibbons (1648 – 1721) was regarded as the finest wood carver in England and mainly used lime for his fine detailed work. His work adorned royal palaces and cathedrals Windsor Castle – Hampton Court Palace – St Paul’s Cathedral for example.

All of the carving lime we have is kiln dried and of the highest quality available. We offer a wide selection of sizes at all times to try to accommodate any carving project. With a potential 890 sizes, if we had all options on the shelf at any one time, this being our aim. Some thicknesses are sold as sawn, and some P.A.R planed on all four sides.

In addition to our long-established lime sizes, we also supply 15mm thick P.A.R lime love spoon blanks.  All lime wood carving blanks have been cut to size and all edges are sanded to minimise the chance of splinters and improved aesthetic look.

10mm and 15mm P.A.R oak carving blanks are also available amongst our Wood Carving Blanks.

Carving is one of the oldest crafts, dating back throughout history, it is pursued all over the world. Enjoy your wood carving….
