The hard ceramic particles and bond means it will never wear out in normal use. Keep one to hand and use frequently. If your water stone is dished or hollow; use the grooved surface of the flattening stone, After the hollow is removed, use the flat surface of the back of the flattening stone. Rubbing with a circular motion across the top of the waterstone regularly keeps your sharpening stones in peak condition.
